Northern Nevada will play host in 2005 to a public safety sporting competition expected to bring about 6,000 competitors to the region.

It's the first time the Police and Fire Games sponsored by the California Police Athletic Federation will be held outside California, officials said.

The Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority on Thursday said the games, to be held July 23-30, will be staged at 20 different venues in the Sparks, Reno and Lake Tahoe areas.

The tourism agency said the event will generate about 10,000-plus room nights for area hotels and motels.

About 60 different competitions are planned ranging from basketball, softball, flag football, paintball, motocross and wrestling.

The Sparks Marina will host at least three events: open swim, triathlon, and beach volleyball.
