Douglas County Commissioner Steve Weissinger has pleaded innocent to three counts of misdemeanor embezzlement.
Weissinger, 44, was cited June 13 by South Lake Tahoe police for suspicion of petty theft after allegedly pocketing a $100 bill from the Raley's grocery store where he was an assistant manager.
The two-term commissioner admitted to pocketing the money but said it was an absent-minded mistake and"cash-handling error."
Raley's officials in South Lake Tahoe and Sacramento have declined to comment about the case.
El Dorado County prosecutors said the three counts filed against Weissinger cover a three-month period and evidence includes store surveillance tapes.
Prosecutors said Weissinger waived arraignment and entered his innocent plea through a letter sent by his lawyer, William Cole.
Weissinger is scheduled to appear Aug. 22 in El Dorado County Superior Court for a pre-trial conference, prosecutors said.
