Carson Mom Charged When Toddler Walks Across Highway

A Carson City mother was arrested after she lost track of her toddler and he wandered across U.S. Highway 395.

Cheryl Gomes, 42, called authorities Sunday to report her 3-year-old son had been missing for about 90 minutes, Carson City sheriff's deputies said.

The boy was found about 6:40 p.m. a quarter mile from his home after he apparently crossed the highway near the Glen Eagles Restaurant. It was the second time in a week the boy had walked away from home, deputies said.

Deputy Rudy Hindelang said in the report that when he "advised her son had walked across 395 she was not at all upset." The report listed no witnesses who saw the child crossing the road.

Gomes was booked on suspicion of felony child neglect. Her bail was set at $20,000. Her preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 27 in Carson City Justice Court.
