The Reno City Council has given preliminary approval to a new ordiance designed give cable television customers new protection.

The ordinance comes amid complaints by residents of poor service as the city continues franchise renewal negotiations with Charter Communications.

Under the measure endorsed Wednesday, cable companies operating in the city would be required to track customer complaints and service requests, quickly answer customer telephone calls and complete new customer installations within seven days.

It would also require cable companies to submit monthly reports proving compliance with the law.

Final action on the measure is expected next month.
