A veteran Reno police officer fatally shot a patient at a psychiatric hospital who allegedly tried to attack him in the parking lot with a hammer.
Sparks Police Commander Steve Asher says Reno police responded
to West Hills Hospital about 6:45 this morning on a report of a
suicidal subject who was threatening to shoot someone.
Asher says the first officer on scene found the 47-year-old Reno
man and confronted him. But Asher says the suspect advanced on the

The man failed to follow repeated commands to halt. So fearing
for his safety, the officer fired his revolver at the man and hit
The man was taken to Washoe Medical Center where he died
sometime before eleven o'clock this morning.
Asher did not say how many shots were fired or how many times
the victim was hit.
The officer who has been with the force for 26 years was not
injured. He's been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
