Elko police were trying to determine if a man fell, jumped or was pushed to his death from a third-story balcony over the weekend.
Detectives were investigating the death of James David Assuras as a possible homicide because of numerous conflicting witness accounts, Police Chief Clair Morris said Monday.
The 28-year-old construction worker from McGill died of massive head injuries Saturday when he struck his head on pavement and landed partially in the hotel's swimming pool, police said.
Authorities said Assuras was a registered guest at the downtown hotel-casino but was not a participant in the Elko Motorcycle Jamboree the hotel was hosting.
Results from blood tests also were pending to determine if alcohol was a factor, Morris said.
