The City of Sparks wants to put the brakes on a proposed hospital for Spanish Springs, arguing Washoe County didn't do its homework.
Sparks City Council pushed for an appeal, but didn't file in time. But council members are still voicing their concerns about the traffic impact. They also argue there may not be a need for a hospital in that rural area.
As for residents, opinions are mixed. Some agree, they don't see the need for a hospital. Others say they'd rather have a hospital than a casino, referring to the controvercial Lazy 8 Resort proposed for Spanish Springs.
Washoe Health System, the company that runs Washoe Med, wants to build a 55-bed hospital on 15 acres just off Pyramid Highway in the next 7 to 10 years.
Washoe County Commissioners and the Regional Planning Commission have approved the hospital as part of the area plan. The developer still has to submit a specific plan for approval for the hospital.
