A fire still smoldes tonight at the Lockwood Dump.

The dump, which is located off I-80 between Sparks and Fernley,
caught fire just before six o'clock tonight. It scorched half-an-acre
and sent up a tremendous amount of smoke before firefighters got the
upper hand.

No homes or structures were ever threatened and the fire never spread beyond the dump itself.

Firefighters say they don't yet know the cause but are looking at the possibility of spontaneous combustion.

Officials are currently monitoring and testing the air quality at the dump to make sure that nothing toxic burned and adversely affected the air.
