A Reno attorney, known for winning huge cases against multi-billion-dollar companies, is now facing criminal charges of his own.
Kevin Mirch was arrested Tuesday and is facing insurance fraud charges, which stem from a defamation lawsuit he once filed. In the end, the company's insurance carrier, Howard Group, was prepared to pay Mirch's client.
But before that settlement was signed, an old friend of Mirch's, Davo Giovanni, made claims that the Attorney General believes, constitute insurance fraud against Mirch.
According to a court affidavit, Giovanni made comments that lead the Attorney General's Office to believe that this has happened at least seven times in civil cases against corporations Mirch has sued since 1994.
Attorney David Houston denies the allegations, and says Giovanni is not a credible witness. He also says people of power, outside the Attorney General's Office, may not agree with Mirch's legal tactics and want him disbarred. Houston adds that there's a lot going on behind the scenes the public doesn't know about.
Mirch once ran for Nevada Supreme Court and the State Assembly. Houston says he hasn't had much time to look at the evidence. Mirch was booked into the Washoe County Jail, but has been released on his own recognizance.
