Douglas County Commission Chairman Steve Weissinger says his arrest on a petty theft charge at a grocery store where he's assistant manager resulted from a simple oversight.

Weissinger was arrested Friday after being accused of pocketing a $100 bill at Raley's in South Lake Tahoe. He was released and ordered to appear August fifth in El Dorado County Superior Court.

Police say he was caught with the money by store security, and the incident was captured on video surveillance tape.

Weissinger, who's serving a two-day, unpaid suspension from work, says he intended to put the money back into the store safe and it was a cash-handling error on his part.

The maximum penalty for petty theft is a $1,000 fine and six months in jail.

The 44-year-old Weissinger, a Republican, has been on the commission since 1996 and has worked at Raley's for 14 years.
