RENO - Abortion-rights and anti-abortion groups across the Truckee Meadows are banding together in recognition of one of the most controversial cases in supreme court history.

36 years ago today, the case of Roe v. Wade overturned all state and federal laws banning abortion. With a new pro- choice president in office, both sides say the battle has begun once again.

Both pro-choice and pro-life groups say the anniversary of Roe versus Wade, as well as the recent election, have shed new light on the subject of abortion.

Alison Gaulden with Planned Parenthood says President Obama's victory is promising, but it doesn't mean women's reproductive rights are here to stay.

She says since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, there's been close to a dozen other supreme court decisions that have chipped away at the law. She says if anything, it's time to step up the pro-choice movement.

"We got complacent when pro-choice president, Clinton was in office. We thought, 'oh we're all done, but that's not the case. While Congress may have more members from one party, they're not pro-choice as a whole," said Gaulden.

Melissa Clement of Nevada Right To Life says her group plans to beef up their force as well, educate, and keep an eye on lawmakers with the power to make changes. She says now that a pro-choice president is in office, their purpose is under threat so it's time now to work even harder.

"We certainly hope he doesn't live up to some of his campaign promises because one of the things he promised was to sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That is certainly not a step forward," said Clement.

Since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, a lot has changed on a national level, but those changes have had little effect here locally. The West End Women's Medical Group is still the only place in Reno that performs abortions, and a Reno man named Richard Lombardo still protests there for several hours each day. Both pro-choice and pro-life advocates say the fight has only begun.

"We must remain vigilant. Folks who are vehemently opposed to reproductive rights, they don't stop. So we can't either, no matter who is in office," said Gaulden.

"We will be a force, a presence, a voice for the voiceless as often as we can, wherever we can,' added Clement.

Planned Parenthood is holding an event to commemorate the anniversary of Roe versus Wade on Saturday, January 24th. It starts at 6:00 p.m. at Seven Tea House in downtown Reno. The event includes speeches, an auction and a raffle.

Also on Saturday, more than 100 local members of Nevada Right To Life, will head to San Francisco to march in the 5th annual Walk For Life event. They're leaving by bus at 6:00 a.m. from the Immaculate Conception Church in Sparks.

BO and his Kenya West (formerly known as the United States of America) loves to kill the unborn. You elected him, now YOU pay the price-on earth or the afterlife. You all who voted for him disgust the rest of the world.
