A fiery wreck involving a U-Haul, two tractor-trailer rigs and a pickup truck left one person dead and three injured, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.
According to the patrol, Kathy Denise Bennett, 44, of Needles, Calif., was traveling south on U.S. 95 Tuesday afternoon when her U-Haul truck drifted over the center line into oncoming traffic near Hawthorne, about 130 miles south of Reno.
The U-Haul swiped a tractor-trailer rig and spun out of control, striking another big-rig head on. That truck veered off the road and overturned, the patrol said.
Authorities said the U-Haul burst into flames and was struck a third time by a Ford pickup truck, which also caught on fire.
Bennett was pronounced dead at the scene, the patrol said.
Her 9-year-old son, Daru, suffered head injuries and was taken to Washoe Medical Center in Reno.
One tractor-trailer driver was not injured. The drivers of the other tractor-trailer and the pickup were taken to a hospital in Hawthorne for treatment.
The highway was closed for about 10 hours.
