The man who was just tapped to lead United States forces in Iraq, grew up in our area.

Lieutenant General John Abizaid has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the replacement for General Tommy Franks.

He went to high school in Coleville, California, a town 50 miles south of Carson City on Highway 395.

General Abizaid will head up the U.S. Central Command, making him responsible for American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Last week, he told the Washington Post that he believes there are difficult days ahead in Iraq, and he believes American forces will be there for a long time.
