Body Of Dayton Man Found In Carson River

Authorities have recovered the body of a Dayton man who drowned in the Carson River while trying to save his dog for the rushing current.

Nineteen-year-old Ben Maxwell disappeared in the churning waters a week ago. Authorities say he and four friends were swinging from a tree and jumping into the river near Fort Churchill east of Carson City when Maxwell's dog became caught in the current.

He jumped in after his pet but wound up in trouble himself.

His body was recovered Sunday afternoon. Authorities say he apparently became tangled in submerged debris.

In another drowning incident, a Storey County volunteer firefighter died yesterday at Lahontan Reservoir.

Authorities say 21-year-old Michael Ellis of Dayton swam out to a buoy when he disappeared. His body was found three hours later about 50 feet from shore.
