RENO, Nev. (AP) - A winter storm brought another foot of snow to the Lake Tahoe region, while authorities say icy roads across northern Nevada were blamed for scores of spinouts and at least one traffic death.
The wintry conditions were met with glee by ski resorts gearing up for busy the holiday ski season. In the past 10 days, some areas have picked up 7 feet of snow.
Chains or snow tires were required over Sierra passes between northern Nevada and California, including Interstate 80 over Donner
Summit and U.S. 50 over Echo Summit.
In the Reno area, the storm arrived as a drizzle overnight Sunday, and turned to snow before dawn. Accumulations varied from a dusting to about an inch, but freezing temperatures made roads icy.
The Nevada Highway Patrol says the hazardous conditions contributed to the death of one person on Interstate 80 east of Reno when the driver of a sport utility vehicle lost control and overturned into oncoming lanes. The vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer rig.
Forecasters say another storm could bring more snow to the region just in time to bring northern Nevada a white Christmas.
