RENO - A local man is in jail for allegedly destroying more than a dozen windows at the new courthouse downtown.
49-year-old David Augustine is being held in the Washoe County Jail for destruction of government property charges. And it couldn't have come at a worse time.
Security guards say the damage may end up costing Washoe County more than $40,000 dollars.
It happened at the Mills B. Lane Justice Center just after noon on Sunday.
Security guards say an off-duty courthouse worker just happened to be walking through the area when he heard shattering glass.
A bailiff at the courthouse says in total, 16 windows were broken...all of them by using rocks taken from the bottom of the Truckee River just a few hundred yards away.
Court supervisors had to cordon off a large section of the front entrance while they began the cleanup process. Washoe County Sheriff's detectives were also on the scene Monday, looking for more evidence to help in the case.
Court documents show that this is the second time that David Augustine has trashed the Mills Lane courthouse. He was convicted on nearly identical charges back in 2006 for breaking the same exact windows, also using river rocks.
Records show he has only been out of jail since November 5th. A court clerk told us that during Augustine's last appearance in front of a judge, he warned the court not to set him free, saying he would "do it again."
A witness from the courthouse says that while he was breaking the windows, he was also yelling things like "that's what they deserve," and "that's what they get."
Obviously he has not been convicted of yesterday's destruction....but a Sheriff's detective says t's pretty much a closed case. He says Augustine also has a record in Sparks, and in California for similar vandalism where government buildings seemed to be his target.
