Sierra Army Depot Withdraws Open Burning Petition

Sierra Army Depot north of Reno has withdrawn an application seeking to resume open burning and detonation of munitions.

Army officials say the decision was based on a legal review and
lawsuit settlement.

Downwind residents and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe sued the government in 2000 in an attempt to stop the burning because of toxic smoke.

Under a settlement, the Army pledged to explode only unstable munitions in an emergency. Officials say the depot is trying to reduce stockpiles of obsolete weapons.
