FERNLEY, Nev. (AP) - A safety commission formed in response to a
January canal breach that flooded nearly 600 homes in Fernley will
hold its first meeting Monday.
The Truckee Canal Safety Commission, formed in September by the
Truckee-Carson Irrigation District, is charged with presenting recommendations to the TCID board concerning canal repairs.
The panel also will decide how to spend TCID general funds to repair the 31-mile canal that takes water from the Truckee River west of Fernley to Fallon-area farmers.
TCID has imposed a general assessment on all property in the Newlands Project and will use the funds to help cover repairs.
TCID officials say the commission must meet at least once a year, but meetings can be called as necessary throughout the year.
The meeting is set to begin at 4 p.m. Monday at Fernley City Hall.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation owns the canal and TCID operates and maintains it under a contract.
