Desert Dump
On Friday, June 12th at 5:00am, KOLO-TV completed the transition to digital television. Viewers who receive KOLO-TV with an antenna over the air will likely need to rescan their converter boxes or Digital TV’s at that time. An area just north of Reno in Golden Valley use to be a dumping site for Stead Air Force Base. But that practice ended more than 30-years ago. Still some have continued with the tradition and used this space as their personal garbage dump.

John and Meredith Mayeroff have enjoyed riding their horses in this area for years. But some portions of their trip on the trails here near Golden Valley have turned into real eye sores.

John says the dumps can just appear out of nowhere.

"The dumping is occuring well, it just depends where we ride, we ride all of a sudden we'd ride in a an area then there would be a dump in that area."

Mayeroff says the problem has only gotten worse over time. And some of the items left up here are a sign of the times. Like these computers used for target practice. Casings aren't picked up. Yellow, blue and red plastic are strewn across the desert floor. Some have dumped their pets up here.

Meredith says its hard to get her mind around the just who could be doing this.

"Its just, I look around here and think what makes people think they can bring their appliance out here and leave it."

The two could just ignore what they see and ride by... But several times a weeks they come up here and pick up trash.

Mayeroff says he's made county officials aware of the problem. But perhaps because of the amount and frequency of dumping, the only way to curb the problem is to appeal to the conscience of those ruining the landscape.

does anyone else find it as disturbing as i do that the dumping of televisions is emphasized more in this article than the dumping of PETS?! yes, illegal dumping is a bummer, etc etc, but it's far far worse that people are dumping their pets out here, leaving them to die in the desert with little food and soon to be extreme cold. let's get the abuse of live creatures under control and THEN we can deal with some trash lying around, ok?
