A flight instructor and a student pilot were shaken up Wednesday evening when their plane made a hard landing at the Stead Airport.

The student pilot told police that he lost power as he was taking off and tried to land the plane. A wing scraped the runway and the plane skidded off the pavement.

The student and the flight instructor got out of the plane safely, but the plane was damaged. Firefighters were called in because aviation fuel was leaking from the plane.

"They fueled before they had taken off so there is still as significant fuel in the wing. We have a drip that's in the interior," said Assistant Reno Fire Chief Marty Scheuerman.

Niehter the pilot not the instructor was identified.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the accident.
