An accident in the hills above Washoe Valley has claimed the life of a Galena High School student which sent three teens to the hospital.
Sixteen-year-old Nickloas C. Courson was killed in the roll-over accident which occurred Wednesday evening in the hills above Washoe Valley.
The area is a rugged section of the Jumbo Grade trail that winds between Washoe Valley and Virginia City.
None of the four boys involved was wearing a seatbelt and, had they been, authorities say it might have made the difference between life and death.
On the scene, families cried out in disbelief as authorities try to figure out how this pick up truck flipped over.
According to Sgt. Mark Vorderbruggen of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office: "Two were in the front seat, two were in the back, no one was wearing a seatbelt - all four were ejected and the driver was killed"
The three passengers were taken to Washoe Medical Center. They were identified as brothers Nick Olsen, age 16, and Mike Olsen, age 17, along with Mike D. McGlone, age 14.
Authorities say there have been a few accidents on this dusty curvy stretch of Jumbo Grade over the years, but none this serious.
"We need people to slow down buckle up and pay attention to what's going on," Vorderbruggen says.
