Trial Begins in Reno for Suspect in Halloween Killings

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Trial is underway in Reno for a 19-year-old charged with killing three people at an off-campus Halloween party last year.

Samisoni Taukitoku is charged with three counts of murder and four counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Witnesses say violence and gunfire erupted at a rented home where more than 100 people had gathered last year for a Halloween party attended by many past and current University of Nevada, Reno students.

Killed were 21-year-old Charles Coogan Kelly, an acclaimed snowboarder; 23-year-old UNR senior Derek Kyle Jensen; and
23-year-old Nathan Viljoen, a former UNR student.

Several other people were injured.

Nineteen-year-old Saili Manu, who police say crashed the party with Taukitoku and two 16-year-olds, pleaded guilty earlier to two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 12.
