Nevada's impeached state controller, Kathy Augustine, died today in a Reno hospital. She was 50 years old.
A hospital spokeswoman says Augustine's family was with her when she died.
Augustine suffered a massive heart attack over the weekend and
was in a coma.
Governor Kenny Guinn said in a statement he was, quote, "deeply
saddened by the distressing news of someone so young and vibrant as
Kathy passing away so unexpectedly."
Guinn spokesman Steve George said the governor was expected to
quickly name a replacement.
Augustine's husband Chaz Higgs blamed the heart attack on stress
caused by her campaign to run for state treasurer.
Augustine was the only constitutional officer in Nevada history
to have been impeached and convicted.
She faced fund-raising difficulties and had been urged by state
Republican Party Chairman Paul Adams to not embarrass the party by
seeking another elective office.
