RENO (AP) - A panel formed by Gov. Gibbons to reduce government
waste is considering major reductions in state employee health and
retirement benefits.

At a meeting Friday in Reno, the Spending and Government Efficiency Commission considered changes to the Public Employee Benefits Program and Public Employees Retirement System.

Among other things, the panel discussed a proposal that would require state employees to be at least 60 years of age before they could begin collecting pension benefits.

Employees currently can retire at any age after working a certain minimum number of years.

The commission, headed by former U.S. Printer Bruce James, also considered a proposal that would reduce the rate at which retirement benefits would accrue for state employees.

No action was taken on any of the proposals.

Panel members say the proposed changes to retirement and health benefits would have to be much more thoroughly reviewed before final recommendations are sent to the governor.

PLEASE... the insurance coverage for state employees is terrible to start with! Those of us who are retired are having a hard enough time getting by. Retirees don't get raises of ANY kind for 3 years to there income, then it's only 2%, not anywhere near the cost of living. Now they want to reduce our health benefits? I stuck with my state career for 30 years. I was promised certain benefits if I stayed the full 30 years. Now most of the benefits are gone or so severely reduced that most of us have forgone going to the doctor and have very limited funds to enjoy retirement. And by the way....those of us who stuck it out for 30 years DON"T have social security or medicare to fall back on. Any for those who do have enough time invested in Social Security will only get a max. of $400. Where's the fairness and the promised benefits for those who dedciated their careers to the State of Nevada?
