Washoe County commissioners have reversed planning commission approval of a permanent staging area near Gerlach sought by organizers of the Burning Man Festival.
Festival operators sought permission to use 200 acres near the Black Rock Desert to permanently store vehicles and supplies used for the annual counter-culture festival that draws tens of thousands of people.
Area residents opposed the plan, saying is would lead to litter and tax the remote community's public safety resources.
Commissioners denied the special use permits on a three-to-two vote, citing insufficient water supplies, potential fire hazards and concerns over trash.
