Embattled Charter School Given Deadline

Washoe County School District trustees who tried unsuccessfully to shut down a Sparks charter school last year say the school still is not complying with state law.

Trustees on Tuesday gave Nevada Leadership Academy administrators 31 days to correct 17 deficiencies cited in a recent review that found problems in children's health and safety and recording keeping.

The review also found the academy is $374,000 in debt and has not returned to the state nearly $40,000 in federal grant money that wasn't used.

District officials voted to close the school in December, but the academy appealed to district court. A judge in February overturned the action and allowed the school to remain open because of procedural errors by the district.
