First American Woman in Space Encourages All Women

By  |

Dozens of women were honored for their achievements this afternoon at the Reno Hilton. Among them was the first American woman astronaut, Sally Ride.

Doctor Ride spoke of her adventures at the "Nevada Women's Fund Women of Achievement" annual event. The astronaut says she hopes to encourage women of all ages to reach for the stars - literally.

"There have been more than 30 American women in space. Now it's very unual for a shuttle to launch with an all male crew," Ride said.

Doctor Ride is the Professor of Space Science at the University of California, San Diego...and has written four science books for children.
