About 150 Nevada Army National Guard soldiers are packing gear and preparing to leave for an 18-month deployment in support of the war in Iraq.
Capt. April Conway said the 593nd Transportation Company,
headquartered in Reno, has members from Reno, Las Vegas, Carson
City, Winnemucca and Elko.
The unit also has detachments in Elko and Winnemucca that
specialize in hauling 5,000-gallon fuel trailers in combat zones,
The soldiers are packing equipment and supplies at the armory in
Stead, where a mobilization ceremony will be held 7 a.m. Thursday
with Brig. Gen. Cindy Kirkland, state adjutant general.
Last week, Gov. Kenny Guinn gave the unit a state flag that was
flown over Nevada's Capitol to be unfurled in the combat theater.
The soldiers are scheduled to leave Friday and will train
two-to-three months in Texas before being deployed overseas, Conway
