Court Shooting Spawns New Rules

Only police officers can bring firearms into court under an order signed by Washoe District Chief Judge Jerry Polaha.

Friday's order clamping down on guns in the courthouse was
approved after Family Court Judge Chuck Weller was shot in the
chest while standing in his third-floor office June 12th.

District court officials say too many guns in the courtroom is
one of the biggest concerns at the courthouse.

In an Atlanta courtroom in March 2005, a prisoner stole a
deputy's gun and was charged with killing the judge and two others.

A group that included police union officials, judges,
prosecutors and the sheriff's office endorsed the restriction on
guns in the courtroom.

The group agreed plainclothes police should wear colored badges
so bailiffs and deputies can recognize them.
