RENO - Contrary to earlier reports of possible layoffs at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno, the Chief Executive Officer of the casino's holding company said today there are no major layoffs being planned.

Since Sunday, KOLO 8 News has received emails and phone calls about impending layoffs from a handful of people who claimed to be Atlantis employees. Company officials, however, told KOLO 8 those reports are rumors.

John Farahi, CEO of Monarch Casino and Resorts, said today that the Reno Atlantis has been undergoing a multi-million dollar expansion, actually adding workers during the last few months.

He added that the Atlantis, like most other business these days, are feeling the effects of the slow national and local economy. However, he said there are no employee-layoff plans in the works. The Atlantis has about 19-hundred employees.

As a 17 year team member of Atlatis, I would like to say the recent layoff rumors caused a sleepless night for the casino's employees. After the news aired, many referred to Monday as "d-day." We are all having enough trouble just paying for gas and puting food on the table right now. We don't need to spend a night wondering if we will have a job the next day. The actions of this news channel were completely irresponsible. Checking sources carefully could have saved us all a lot of stress.

It's unfortunate that someone would spread this type of incorrect info in a time when everyone is alreay worried about their job and economic status. Spreading rumors like this is hurtful to the employees and management of Atlantis, and causes unnecessary panic. Shame on anyone involved in this.
