Why We Like Our Politicians Like We Like Our Coffee

RENO - So what do politicians and coffee have in common? Well, sometimes they're rich...others time they're full of hot steam...but most of all, they have a way of getting people energized. This year's presidential race is getting a "jolt" of support, as caffeine plays a new role in politics.
7-11 stores nationwide have come up with a pretty creative marketing scheme to help boost coffee sales and get people involved in this year's election.
They're offering two choices for cups...the Obama...and the McCain. And according to store managers, it's a decision you shouldn't take lightly.
When it comes to coffee, you always have choices...light roast or dark roast, sugar or cream...and now, Democrat or Republican.
"I would pick the McCain cup."
"I'm going with blue. Obama all the way."
Many people already know exactly how they like their coffee, and their candidates. But there are a few who are still trying to figure things out.
Greg Austin, for instance, is undecided...and his reason for that, is rather complicated.
"Old men talk about history and young men talk about vision. Young men talk about vision because they have no history and old men talk about history because they may be lacking vision."
Others say they're leaning one way or the other, toward a red cup, or a blue cup...but they're having trouble committing.
"Well, they both have good qualities, but there are things I don't like, so I am still working on that," said first-time voter Tasha Green.
While there's still a month left until you have to decide which candidate matches your palette, the store manager says these "7-Election" poll results have a pretty small margin of error.
"For the past two elections, we've generally been within one percent of the vote. So it's kind of exciting," said Kathleen Pederson.
At her store, Obama's in the lead, but the majority of coffee drinkers are still weighing their options. Once you pick your candidate...and your coffee, the only choice left is what to put in it.
"I like the white creamer. It's real and I am looking for a real candidate," added Austin.
Reps for 7-11 say 20 ounce-sized coffee cup sales have already gone up significantly...along with people's interest in the presidential election.
