SPARKS, Nev. -- A three year old girl is safe after being found walking in a Sparks neighborhood Sunday night.
Her father is now sitting in the Washoe County Jail.
Sparks police got the call at about 9 last night. The little girl had been found wandering near an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Sullivan Lane.
She was unharmed but alone and unable to tell her rescuers who she was or where her parents were.
"She indicated that she was looking for her mom or dad," says Sparks Police Commander Brian Miller. "She thought they had left the apartment and she had gone to go find them."
Police had no report of a missing child and no quick way of finding who was responsible for her. That didn't come until after 1:30 Monday morning when her father, 24 year old David Hart, called police.
He indicated that he had been sleeping and when he woke up discovered that his daughter had been able to make it out of the apartment on her own," says Miller.
Hart was arrested on charges of child neglect. He was booked into the Washoe County Jail where he's held in lieu of $20,000 dollars bond.
One detail not in dispute is that the little girl did manage to leave her father's apartment on her own.
Miller says that should serve as a caution to any parent of a young child.
"It's just very important that children are unable to make it out of the house without the parents knowing, and the best way to do that is with auxiliary locks."
The little girl's mother wasn't present at the time. Miller says his information is that the couple is separated.
