RENO (KOLO) -- United Airlines is announcing it's doubling the fee for a second checked bag. For flights booked starting Tuesday for travel on or after November 10, 2008 the fee will jump from $25 to $50.

American, Continental, Horizon/Alaska, Delta and US Airways are among airlines operating at Reno-Tahoe International Airport that require some type of baggage fee, according to an airport spokesperson.

Spokesperson Heidi Berthold recommends checking the Web sites of individual airlines to determine what fees are charged.

Southwest, a major carrier operating at Reno-Tahoe International does not require a fee for the first or second checked bag, according to southwest.com.

United says its fuel costs are more than 50 percent higher than last year, prompting the increased fee.
