ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Newmont Mining Corp. says it will cover the bounced paychecks of workers who were laid off in August from the Jerritt Canyon Mine by another mining outfit.

Yukon-Nevada Gold Corp., which operated the Jerritt Canyon Mine, laid off about 400 workers last month.

Yukon-Nevada also milled ore for Newmont, which placed a lien on some Yukon-Nevada accounts after the mine shut down.

A Newmont spokeswoman says the gesture will cost Newmont about $400,000.

Newmont, along with Toronto-based Barrick Gold Corp. and Great Basin College, also announced they will jointly fund $15,000 in scholarships for Great Basin College students who lost them after the mine in Elko County shut down.

It's nice to see someone step up and do "the right thing" for those miners and the students. While it may cost Newmont a lot of money up front, what it gains in respect can't be measured in dollars alone. GOOD JOB!!
