Sparks, NV - Sparks City Manager Shaun Carey announced the layoff of 13 City of Sparks employees in the Community Development Department today. This is the second round of layoffs in the department since March and is the result of two years of declining development revenues.
"We had hoped that the first round of layoffs and nearly two years of cost-saving measures would curb the revenue loss enough to avoid this second round of job cuts," said City Manager Shaun Carey. "This is a very difficult time for our employees and their families. Coming to this decision was arduous, but necessary to ensure the fiscal health of the Community Development Department."
The eliminated positions include:
1 - customer service coordinator
1 - electronic information management services coordinator
1 - current planning manager
1 - administrative secretary
1 - office assistant
1 - records specialist
1 - public works inspector
4 - building inspectors
2 - building permit specialists
In addition to today's layoffs, two employees have been reassigned to other positions and several employees affected by today's layoffs are entitled to other positions within the city. If those employees choose to exercise their job rights, employees who currently hold the positions they would move to will lose their jobs.
The Sparks Community Development Department is largely funded by fees paid for building permits, inspections, planning entitlements, and other development services.
To help employees transition, the city has placed laid off employees on paid administrative leave and will maintain employee benefits through the month of September.
