Reno Man Convicted of Murdering Teacher

RENO, Nev. (AP) - A jury has found a Reno man guilty of the October 2006 murder of a substitute teacher and the same-day robbery of a man in an adult book store.

34-year-old Jeffery Sims faces a maximum of two consecutive life sentences for bludgeoning 38-year-old Joan Varley to death with a
weight-lifting bar and up to 15 years in prison for robbery when he's sentenced Oct. 7.

A Washoe County District Court jury deliberated about six hours over two days before returning the verdict Tuesday.

Varley's body was found in an office at the River's Edge Apartments in Reno. Her mother owned the complex, and Varley helped her manage it.

Sims' lawyer says his client had been high on crack cocaine for about five days before the killing. Sims was a tenant who knew Varley.
