The Nevada State Board of Pharmacy has unanimously approved regulations allowing consumers to import prescription drugs from Canada.
The board has agreed to license Canadian pharmacies that meet
that country's safety standards and will post a Web site linking
consumers to the approved pharmacies.
The regulations must first pass a legislative committee meeting
May 4th before being enacted.
A Food and Drug Administration official told board members on
Thursday that the importation of prescription drugs for personal
use is illegal and unsafe. She said the board was leaving consumers
open to criminal and civil penalties.
But supporters of the plan say the current method of ordering
drugs over the internet is unsafe. And that the pharmacy board's
oversight will help ensure the prescriptions safety.
