Traditional special events in Reno like the air races and Artown have come up short on their funding requests as tourism officials put down the big bucks on two premier attractions.
The Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority is providing
250-thousand dollars for special events.
That's about half last year's amount because the authority
promised hundreds of thousands for two projects -- a massive tent
to house the Safari Club International convention and repairs to
the convention center to allow a barbecue event in the facility.
The focus is to sell the convention center by funding the Safari
Club and the Patio and Barbecue Association, which has meant less
for other groups.
Combined, they wanted 356-thousand dollars. They are getting
125-thousand dollars total. Another 125-thousand will be allocated
in the fall for different events.
