A landmark Douglas County saloon was destroyed by fire early today.
The Valley Bar in the community of Centerville near Gardnerville
had stood at the intersection of Highway 88 and Centerville Lane
for decades.
Firefighters arrived to find the attic on fire. The roof
collapsed shortly after they escaped the building. No injuries were
reported.
The cause of the 5 a-m blaze is under investigation.
Co-owner Julian Larrouy Junior says the original portion of the
saloon was built in Virginia City sometime in the 1850s or 1860s
and moved to Centerville by 1900.
Initially used as a cheese factory in Centerville, the building
became a bar in 1902. It went through several owners until
Larrouy's parents bought it in 1945.
The building featured two additions, one dating back to the
1930s and the other to sometime after 1945.
Larrouy says he plans to rebuild, using as much of the original
structure as possible.
