Working on a grant provided by the Department of Public Safety/Office of Traffic Safety, the Sparks Police Department conducted a DUI Check-point in the 1000 block of El Rancho Drive. The check-point was conducted between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and only vehicles traveling north bound were screened.
Officers working the event screened 1075 vehicles looking for impaired drivers and for seat belt and car seat violations. Of those vehicles stopped, 13 citations were issued for seat belt violations, 16 citations
were issued for car seat violations, 13 citations were issued for miscellaneous offenses, 10 drivers were investigated for driving under the influence and 3 of those were arrested for DUI.
The purpose of this event was not only an attempt to remove impaired drivers from the street, but was also conducted at the specific date and times to maximize the educational benefit to the community on the
dangers of drinking and driving and not having vehicle occupants properly restrained.
The proximity to the local drive-in theater gave officers the opportunity to speak with more drivers and also allowed thousands of other motorists the opportunity to watch the check-point taking place. It is hoped that with this additional exposure, those individuals who did not go through the check-point, but witnessed the event, will think twice before drinking and driving and having unrestrained persons in a motor vehicle.
