RENO, Nev. (AP) - A man who was convicted of raping a young girl
in Washington State and fled 12 years ago while awaiting sentencing
has been arrested in Reno, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
Gary Daniel Meredith, 38, was arrested Tuesday night at the home of a friend, authorities said Wednesday. He was being held at the Washoe County Jail pending extradition proceedings to return him to Washington.
According to police reports, Meredith picked up four girls ranging in age from 12 to 14 at a Tacoma, Wash., skating rink on Oct. 29, 1994.
He drove the girls to his apartment, gave them alcohol, then took the 12-year-old to his bedroom where the other girls later found him raping her, the Marshals Service said.
Meredith was free on bail when he failed to appear for sentencing in 1996.
He also has two prior rape convictions in 1991 and 1993, authorities said.
During his years on the run, the Marshals Service said Meredith used at least three known aliases from three different states, each with a drivers license or identification card.
