The University of Nevada, Reno has ordered an immediate hiring freeze on state-funded teaching and staff positions.
The Reno Gazette-Journal cites a campuswide e-mail sent by school Provost and Vice President John Frederick.
Frederick says the university is facing a projected shortfall of
two-point-one (M) Million dollars. He blames the looming budget
deficit partly on soaring utility costs.
Frederick says U-N-R's power bills so far this academic year
already have cost 650-thousand-dollars more than expected.
Growing enrollment also is contributing to the problem as well
as a legislative mandate to refund about one-point-eight
million-dollars in salary savings this fiscal year.
