CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A Henderson legislator was accepting
political contributions during a special session of the Legislature
in violation of state law.
Republican Assemblyman Bob Beers says that he accepted the
contributions through his Web sites in error.
In the blog on the site, Beer said he had received two "unlooked for" contributions that day and he would return the money.
Lawmakers were called into a three-day special session Friday to
deal with the state's budget crisis. The Legislature wrapped up
their work late Friday, two days early.
State law says legislators may not solicit or accept contributions from "the day after" the governor issues the proclamation calling the session until 15 days after the special session is completed.
Legislators who violate this requirement face civil penalties of as much as $5,000 per offense.
One of the contributions to Beers came from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The newspaper donated $5 to test if the assemblyman had disabled the contribution function on his site.
The paper says about a half dozen other southern Nevada lawmakers who collect donations online had disabled the sites during the session.
