Washoe County Sheriff's Deputies say the man was in his early 60s.
He was hiking with friends off the Mt. Rose highway when he collapsed and was unable to be resuscitated.
Traffic was stalled as care flight responded to the scene.
The sheriff's office says this death is a good reminder to take extra caution on the mountain and to pace yourself.
It's also a reminder to never hike alone in the mountains.
