A quick-moving storm dropped up to 21 inches of snow
in the Sierra Nevada and snarled traffic over mountain passes.
Chains were lifted today on all three major trans-Sierra
highways linking the Sacramento and Reno areas: Interstate 80 over
Donner Summit, U-S 50 over Echo Summit and Highway 88 over Carson
But controls are still in effect on other Tahoe highways,
including Highway 89 near Truckee and U-S 50 over Spooner Summit.
Delays of as much as four hours were reported by motorists over
Jubilant Tahoe ski resort operators say the snow would allow
excellent conditions for thousands of skiers and snowboarders on
Martin Luther King Junior Day.
Alpine Meadows resort just north of Tahoe reported 18 to 21
inches of new snow Sunday.
The National Weather Service is calling for a break in the
weather until another system brings a chance of snow Tuesday night.
