Phone service has been spotty or out altogether for many Sprint-Nextel customers in Nevada and along the West Coast.
Officials say the problem was a fiber optic cable got cut about
12-30 P-M today between Phoenix and Palm Springs, California.
A Sprint-Nextel spokesman John Taylor says the problem was
compounded because the network couldn't reroute calls through a
main line in Reno due to maintenance work there.
Those affected include wireless, long-distance and Internet
Sprint P-C-S and Nextel national networks -- and local, residential
and business customers.
No word yet how many customers are affected -- or how long it'll
take to get service restored.
