Scheels is heading to Sparks.
The Fargo-based sporting goods company plans a $40 million store
near Reno, in spring 2008, Chief Executive Officer Steve Scheel said.
The company spent two years researching the Reno area before
deciding to build in Sparks, a community of about 66,000, he said.
"We came to the conclusion we just couldn't pass this one up,"
Scheel said. "We're going to be a major attraction on I-80."
The new store, to be called Scheels Retail Shopping Experience,
will be similar to the new Scheels store in Fargo, with an indoor
Ferris wheel, giant aquariums, wildlife mountain and shooting
The Reno-area store is to employ more than 250 people.
Scheel said it will have bronze sculptures on the outside and a
casino-type entrance that will make it a little more expensive than
the Fargo store.
"It will have much more entertainment and much more pizazz,"
he said.
Scheel said he was drawn to Nevada by its sports activities.
"It's the adventure place," he said.
Scheels employs more than 3,000 people and owns 22 stores in
seven states, including the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin,
Montana and Nebraska.
