Casino Battle Looms

The Reno City Council will hear two very
different stories tonight when it meets to consider allowing
unrestricted gambling at U-S 395 and the Geiger Grade highway south
of town.
Station Casinos says its proposed casino at the base of the
Mount Rose Highway could add 13-hundred jobs and generate more than
100 (m) million dollars in payroll and goods and services for the
region.
The Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada opposes the
casino.
Alliance co-founder Bob Fulkerson says the numbers released by
Stations Casino show how desperate the company is to build south of
town.
He says there are some economic benefits with the project, but
they don't compare with the economic downturns for downtown Reno.
The alliance released a report last week that said the casino
would draw as much as 30 (m) million dollars in gambling revenues
from downtown Reno and jeopardize Reno's redevelopment efforts.
Reno casinos won 742 (m) million dollars last year.
