On June 1, 2008, Sparks Police Department officers responded to the 2100 Block of Holman Way in Sparks on a report of shots fired. While responding to the incident, officers learned that a victim of a gunshot wound had arrived at Renown Medical Center.
Officers went to Renown and identified the victim as Mauricio Barrera. Barrera was suffering from three separate gunshot wounds to his legs. Barrera underwent emergency surgery to treat his wounds. His injuries are not life threatening.
Several witnesses to the crime were transported to the Sparks Police Department and interviewed. As a result, eyewitnesses were able to identify the suspect as a seventeen year old juvenile. All subjects involved were outside a home where they attended a party. A verbal disagreement erupted between two subjects when the suspect removed a handgun from his wasteband and shot near the crowd and at the victim.
The suspect fled the scene but was located at his home several hours later. The suspect was arrested for Battery with a Deadly Weapon and other related charges.
