On May 4, 2008 at approximately 0230 hours, Reno Police Department officers were summoned to a downtown casino by security personnel on a report of a grossly intoxicated subject. Upon arrival, officers detained an 81 year old, male, Reno resident for civil protective custody, as he was too intoxicated to care for himself.
The detainee was placed into the Reno Police transport vehicle. Subsequently, the transport officers responded to the 200 block of Mill Street to pick up an arrested person before transporting the detainee to the Washoe County Jail. The officers observed the original detainee, who was alone in the rear portion of the transport vehicle, to be unconscious and not breathing.
The officers immediately began emergency life-saving procedures, while summoning paramedics. Upon arrival, Remsa personnel transported the subject to Renown Medical Center where he expired.
Detectives with the Sparks Police Department and Reno Police Department are jointly investigating this in-custody death. The identify of the deceased is not being released at this time, pending notification of the next of kin. Cause of death is pending autopsy.
